In 2020 Honda pulled out of Formula One.

It was a decision that left Red Bull Racing with a huge problem, just at the moment where they were starting to claw back the significant advantage that the dominant Mercedes team had over the rest of the pit lane.

Red Bull had the best driver, the best aero package and one of the best teams in the business.

But without a reliable engine, they would be uncompetitive.

Their options were thin. They could have signed with two engine manufacturers who had delivered underperforming engines previously to the team, or try and do a deal with Mercedes. None of these options were palatable, or possible.

Instead they embarked on one of the biggest, most disruptive bets in the sport's history - building their own power unit.

The odds were against them

All of their competitors had been building engines for decades, and could use the tech developed in F1 in their consumer cars, justifying the costs.

Red Bull had their own engine from scratch. They had no knowledge, no history of building engines, no facilities, no staff and no reason to build an engine other than for for race performance on track.

This is their story.
